Q When I walk by a house on the street, the windows are one of the first things I notice. Is there any way to enhance the exterior of my home through the right window treatments? Is there anything you can suggest to really draw attention to my windows from the outside?

A The best way to enhance the exterior of your home for curb appeal is through a unified window treatment. One type of treatment, like same-sized shutters, silhouettes or pirouettes, will look the best. But if the same treatment is not possible, similar would be the next best thing, like shutters and silhouettes with the same sized vanes.

Q Is it okay to use drapes and blinds together on a single window? I’m always afraid of going overboard.

A The layered look is very trendy today. Blinds and drapes work very well together, and add a much-needed finishing touch to any room. Some examples of good combinations are woven woods and side panels, wood blinds with decorative tapes and complementary side panels. Even shutters with side panels provide a softer and more finished appearance.

TIP: Coordinate your window treatments with elements of your interior, for example, your furniture, accessories, carpets and even your walls. It doesn’t have to match perfectly.

Q If I have multiple windows in a single room, can I mix and match, using blinds on one window, and drapes on the other, or should I be consistent?

A It’s best to be as consistent as possible in the same room in terms of type of treatment, colour and fabric. This will ensure that all of the treatments relate to each other. Some smaller windows may not require a full drapery or side panel, and in that case, a Roman blind in the same fabric will provide that same sense of relativity.

TIP: Create the illusion of a larger window using drapery treatments as opposed to the other options available.

Q Are there any products out there that will offer privacy without obstructing my view?

A Larger vane sizes – a 4 1/2 inch shutter vane, the four-inch silhouette vane, the new five-inch grande pirouette and the 2 1/2-inch and 2 5/8-inch wood and faux wood blinds – have a larger view, making them look less busy and more modern.
